Back in the 1980’s there was a strong social movement (spurred on by the feminist movement) to redefine masculinity, and what is means to be “manly.” At the time, I was sure these new (gentler, transactional and more egalitarian) understandings of what it means to be a man would broadly take hold in the culture. But now, almost 40 years later, a new (or is it old?) “toxic masculinity” seems to be on the rise. From the White House to Fox News to the locker room men are acting badly, treating others with disrespect, aggression, bullying and abuse of power. As Unitarian Universalists, we must do what we can to confront and dismantle toxic masculinity.
